sarah ann peploe

The only confirmed information regarding Sarah comes from the registration of her marriage to Isaac William Mallindine at Christ Church in Southwark on 25 March 1895. She is listed as Sarah Ann, aged 33 years, and the daughter of Edward Peploe, a Decorator. The only close match for this information is for a Sarah Susanna Peploe, born in Limehouse on 24 July 1858, to Edward Peploe and Mary Ann Rayden. Subsequent census information lists Sarah’s date of birth as 1860 and 1858 and her place of birth as London or Stepney.

Her life before her marriage is also a bit of a mystery but based on the research completed to date, it appears that Sarah had a previous relationship with Amos Moore — the brother-in-law of her future husband, Isaac Mallindine — and they had seven children. To date, no marriage between Sarah and Amos has been found. Amos was born in Newington in 1853 to William Moore and his wife Frances Mary Cookson and his younger sister, Elizabeth, married Isaac Mallindine in 1878.

Sarah and Amos' first child, Frances Elizabeth, was born in Southwark on 15 April 1876 and when the census was taken five years later, Frances was living with her aunt, Elizabeth Moore, and her husband Isaac Mallindine at 15 New Street in Lambeth. Sarah and Amos were living at 53 Mint Street in Southwark with their two month old son George Isaac William and his recent birth, on 9 February, might explain why Frances was staying with relatives. Both Frances and George were baptised under the name Moore at St John Waterloo Road on 20 March 1881 and at the time, Amos was working as a Butcher.

Alfred Edward was born on 16 May 1883 at 7 Lombard Street and baptised at St George the Martyr on 17 June followed by Frances Mary on 16 October 1886; when she was baptised at St Saviour on 7 November, the family was living in Union Street and Amos was working as a Labourer.

No birth or baptism record has been found under Moore or Peploe for their fifth child, Amos, but a later school record under the surname Moore lists his birth date as 21 October 1888. Likewise, no baptism record has been found for son William who was born in 1890 but there is a birth registration in St Saviour under the name Peploe and the mother’s surname is listed as Moore in the GRO Indexes.

In 1891, Amos and Sarah were living at 2 Victoria Court in Lambeth but only two of their six children, George and William, were living with them. Their first daughter Frances Elizabeth is presumed to have died before 1886 when they named a second daughter Frances but there are no records relating to Alfred, Amos or Frances Mary in 1891 although the last two appear in later records.

According to the 1939 Register, their son Ernest was born on 3 November 1892 and although no baptism record has been found, there is a birth registration in Lambeth under Peploe with the mother’s surname listed as Moore.

In 1893, Amos appears in the Electoral Register at 8 Victoria Court but at some point over the next few years, their relationship ended and in March 1895, Sarah married Isaac Mallindine. It is not known if Amos kept in contact with his children but he later fell on hard times and was forced to enter the workhouse a number of times in 1896, and again in 1901 and 1904. In 1911, he was staying at the Salvation Army Hostel in Southwark and there are further workhouse records in 1920 so it appears that he struggled to support himself after his split from Sarah.

Sarah and Isaac had three children and their first daughter, Martha Ann, was born just six months after their marriage. In 1901, they were living at 1 Hatfield Place in Southwark and four of her children — George, Amos, William and Ernest — were living with them. Ten years later, they were at 7 Caffrey Place with Martha and their two youngest children, Eliza Kathleen and Harry Edward. Isaac died seven months after the census and Sarah died the following year.

Frances Mary married William Arthur Sculthorpe at St Peter in Southwark on 4 March 1906 with her brother George standing as one of the witnesses. She married under the name Peploe and gave her father's name as Amos Peploe, deceased, although he was still alive so this may be an indication that Frances had no contact or knowledge of her father's whereabouts. Frances and William had five children and in 1911, they were living at 13b Canvey Street in the Streets Buildings along with her brothers George and William. Frances and William later moved to north London and in 1939, they were living at 20 Wilson Street in Enfield; Frances died in Wood Green in 1961.

Their eldest son George served in the Royal Engineers during the first world war before marrying Florence Jessie Willmot at St Andrew in Lambeth on 20 April 1918 and they had two children. The couple later divorced and George died in Brockley on 14 June 1953.

Amos married Sarah Dickenson at Christ Church in Southwark on 26 May 1912 using the surname 'Peplow' rather than Moore. Both he and Sarah were living at 23 Hatfield Place when they married and Amos was working as a Box Maker. Sara was born on in Borough in 1892 to John James and Maria Dickenson. Amos and Sarah had two children: Henry in 1911 and William Richard in 1913. Six months after his son's birth, Amos died in a work accident when he fell from a building in Holborn while working as a window cleaner. Sarah remarried on 30 January 1916 to Henry James Rix.

William married Elizabeth Hanness at St Peter in Southwark on 5 April 1915 and they had two daughters, Annie Mary born in 1915 and Violet Florence born in 1917. William was living at 15 Streets Buildings next to his sister Frances and working as a Carman when he married. In 1939, Elizabeth, a widow, was living at 43 Sutherland Square in Southwark with youngest daughter Violet and one lodger but no death record has been found for William. Elizabeth died in Wandsworth in 1968.

Ernest was working as a Van Boy and boarding with the Smith family at 29 Avonmouth Street in Borough in 1911. He married Rose Midwinter on 31 May 1914 at St Mark in Southwark under the name Mallindine but he later returned to the church and advised the vicar that the information int he register needed to be corrected, specifically his surname to Peploe and father's name to Amos Peploe. They had seven children and all used the name Peploe consistently after that. In 1939, Ernest and Rose were living at 49 King and Queen Street in Southwark along with their youngest daughter Doris and Ernest was still working as a Carman. He died in Lambeth in 1968 and Rose in 1977.

Sarah died at the Southwark Infirmary on 20 December 1914 and Amos Moore died in Southwark in 1930.
